Staff Blog: VCON Demo: “The Ballad of Perry Steiner”

Herein is a prose-ified retelling of the first Demo session of The Triune Legacy’s Lexi Fotia episode at VCON earlier this month. It wasn’t intended to necessarily become a completely insane player vs. player free-for-all, but none-the-less, the players in Vancouver gave us an epic story. If this session were to be made into a part of a film or television show, it might span 10 minutes at the most, but we spent two hilarious hours with it.

As the story setting goes, there was an ancient civilization in what’s now Spain. No one believes it exists. Archaeologist Sean Ford just unearthed the autobiography of this ancient civilization’s last Emperor. He is bringing it back into the country to meet with an priest from the Vatican, sent to authenticate the book. Father Thomas Cyan and Sean Ford arrive in separate jets at a small Burlington, Vermont airport. Officer Gregory Snipes is waiting for them, a local police escort requested by Sean Ford. He’s been seeing weird shit since he unearthed the ancient book, and you can never be too careful with stuff like this.

Petey Simmons, a stunning, stout blond woman – and a very cunning thief, watched the Lexi Fotia walk out of the airport with three people. Perry, her hired gun, recognized the female cop. They had exchanged blows and bullets with one another several times before. Petey stood about five feet tall, and five feet wide – a veritable cube of muscle. He took one look at Officer Snipes, clenched his fists, and would have charged her right then and there, in the airport, if Petey hadn’t piped up and suggested that he might be better off doing it later. Instead, the two criminals piled into Simmons’ station wagon and tailed the book and its keepers in their rented mini-van. Petey figured she could make off with the priceless book and sell it for a lot of cash on the black market. They made their way into town after the book, not thinking to look behind them to see that they too were being tailed.

Ashe McBain throttled down her black motorcycle outside the First Eastern hotel. It was dusk in Burlington, and it would be a long night. Dismounting the bike, she adjusted her clothes and made sure the broadsword strapped to her back would hold fast. The two story hotel seemed like a decent establishment, and she was sure to get some unwanted attention, but Ashe’s sword was both the cause and the cure for this. She stood by her bike until the time was right to make her move, wondering if she’d have to use her sword on any of the poor bastards who held the book, or the fast-talking blond and her giant meat-cube of a mercenary who were quite conspicuously tailing them.

The ancient book and the current owners had just checked in. Petey and Perry entered the hotel when the coast was clear, but before Petey had a chance to soften the concierge and get a name and location on the party with her book, Perry “The Cube” Steiner started to do the talking. When asked for identification, Perry dropped his duffel-bag (which fell with a suspicious clang!)and grabbed the poor guy by the collar, snarling “You don’t need to see our ID, bub!” Behind them stood Ashe unnoticed. She put on a warm smile to comfort the visibly shaken concierge and nonchalantly asked, “I’m with the priest’s party who just checked in. Could you tell me what room they’re in?”

I had a great time playing, and am happy to say that I just received my copy of Triune Legacy.

The only downside is that I will never get to play Perry again.

Hi there, Cube. Petey here. I was wondering if you’re planning on attedning Vcon next year.
I know rag (Sean Ford) and myself definitely want to.

Regarding the game, it was so much fun! I didn’t even come to play originally, but to watch (it was my first time roleplaying at a table, I was nervous. For the first minute of so, that is).

I definitely hope to see everyone again next year. Hopefully in a hotel that doesn’t ring an alarm when you try to use the stairs >.>

The demo was a blast, it’s a shame I could only play Sean the first two of the three sessions.
